Nothing Like a 7 Year Old, to Make a 41 Year Old Act Like a 2 Year Old!

I have the unique honor and pleasure of being able to be home with my 7 year old son during the day this summer.  Part of the summer he was in summer camp enjoying all the benefits of hanging out with other kids, making new friends, playing ball, swimming and the like.  That ended however two weeks ago, and the little guy is hanging with dad since then.  While I cherish these moments that other dads would kill for, there is a part of this beautiful thing that is killing me!  It seems as though, the youthful competition that exists when one is playing basketball, or a board game, or Wii game with your son that tends to bringn out the little boy within me!  I’m not complaining, but, ruther just pointing out the funny parts thats all.

For instance, not since I was 7 myself have I uttered the following phrases, and with such vigor and repetition!—  ‘stinker-butt’, ‘cheater-head’, ‘liar-pants’, ‘wah-wah-wah’, ‘no fair’, ‘no it’s my turn’, and so on.

On the one hand, getting in touch with your inner child is refreshing and let’s face it, downright fun…it is also a bit weird!   Ever think why ‘maturity’ has to abolish childlike fun?  Why is it, when bowling with your buddies, or shooting hoops with the guys, or during a vigorous round of Texas Hold ’em, you can’t shout out at the top of your lungs, “CHEATER BUTT!”???  What if you did?  Why can’t we throw playful tantrums anymore?  What is it about being ‘old’ that strips away our innate right to protest with such vigor?  Maybe the next time you get pulled over by a cop for speeding, try looking out the window at the lawman and simply say, “no fair, you can’t write that ticket”  Or perhaps something like, “using that laser gun is cheating!  My radar only picks up the other thingy’s”  I’m not saying it will work, but darn it, it wure would make for more interesting dinner conversation.

Well, all you stinker-butts out there, have a swell day.
